COACHING TIP #14 | I said "NO"!

Writer: MICHAEL G. DAVISMICHAEL G. DAVIS

In sales we have been taught to get to “Yes” at all costs, as if “No” were death. And for many of us it is. We have all these negative connotations with “No.” We talk about the rejection of “No,” about the fear of hearing it. “No” is the ultimate negative word. For good negotiators, “No” is pure gold. Politely saying “No” to your opponent calmly hearing “No,” and just letting the other side know that they are welcome to say “No” has a positive impact on any negotiation. In fact, your invitation for the other side to say “No” has an amazing power to bring down barriers and allow for beneficial communication. In what situations should you be pushing for a NO instead of running from hearing it?
